YR 1 ASSESSMENT WEEK 2, TASK 1 DIGITAL SKILLS - PSYOP

ARTIST RESEARCH

Psyop

This animation was created to promote an upcoming game called 'Dishonored', they decided to created an engrossing prequel series for Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios. The online series gives gamers a first hand glimpse into the steampunk-inspired, shadowy whaling city of Dunwall which is a location withing the upcoming game. I think this is an excellent way to promote an upcoming release. The animation itself is great, the art style and production consists of each frame being created traditionally by hand, Each frame was essentially a fully rendered style frame, which was then enhanced with 3D elements to add to the painterly atmosphere, dimension and depth of each shot.

The art style defiantly helps to set the mood, using mainly dark and dull shades to create the scenes along with a contrasting bright background to emphasis the content that is happening in the fore and midground. With this animation having a narrator throughout the entire video it was easy to see the story and what was happening but I think the artwork in the animation could be improved more as it was the narration that made me understand the purpose of this animation.

The second example of Psyop's work is this animation that was created for Coca-Cola to advertise their brand. The animation is based on the motto of the company 'Coca-Cola, open happiness' and it is very obvious that was the concept throughout this animation. My favorite part of the animation would be the sudden changed between the man and dogs perspective and how they are completely different, at the same time the colour scheme changes and suddenly you see these bright burst of colour then it is switched back to the gloomy weather and environment. All of the elements of this animation seem to be created traditionally and put together in a program like After Effects, the style and movement of the characters remind me of the 101 Dalmatians animated film.  Overall I really like this animation, the production of it seems quite simple but the time spent drawing each frame would of been a challenge, the mood, atmosphere and pace all contributes towards the two perspectives of the dog and the owner.

The final examples of Psyop's work is very different to all of the previous animations i have looked at, mainly because this example isn't an animation, it is a short film. Psyop partnered with Jim Henson Creature Shop to bring the Temple Run Demon Monster to life for an online series of short films exploring the famous monster's true motivations. The breakdown of the production methods would be much different to previous examples by using reference material of the character form the actual game they constructed a life size figure of the demon monkey and filled short films of a day to day life while people 'take the idol if you dare!' which is a reference to what the game is about. I chose this because it was different and it shows the diversity of Psyop and how they have a wide range of knowledge, not just creating animations but short films as well.
